In December 2020, bio&bio marked the completion of its project to replace plastic packaging for its own-brand range with compostable film. The project had been prepared for more than a year and covered all 111 products in the range during 2020.

The new packaging was made from cellulose fibres and included a compostable label. The original announcement stated that it met the European EN 13432 standard for industrial compostability. A compostable packaging certification mark appeared on the label.

Jadranka Boban Pejić highlighted the higher cost of compostable packaging as one of the project’s challenges. The company chose to keep consumer prices unchanged and absorb the investment through a reduced margin. She described customers’ support as an important incentive to continue developing solutions that reduce plastic use.

The project formed part of the long-term sustainability work on the bio&bio brand and collaboration with partners investing in recycled and plant-based materials.
